Children's Hospital of Westmead

The appalling tragedy of 2003 in Fairlight involving Sophie Delezio and Molly Wood not only affected their families, but also had a deep impact on the community at large and The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. The high media profile given to the accident raised general awareness of not only the horror of a major burn injury, but also the cutting-edge technology involved in the treatment and management of burn injuries, and the importance of preventing and controlling diseases caused by burns and trauma—factors which played a vital role in saving the lives of the two little girls.

During their six months at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, the Delezio family witnessed first hand the seemingly insurmountable needs that were put upon the Hospital’s Burns Unit and other departments involved. Realising how crucial these needs were to incoming paediatric burns patients, they set up the Day of Difference Foundation to specifically support the prevention, treatment and control of paediatric burns-related injuries, diseases and trauma.

As you can see, trauma and diseases caused by burns can be catastrophic and the treatment and recovery process involves many disciplines and departments across the Hospital. Unfortunately, we cannot prevent burns—but through the Day of Difference Foundation, we can educate people and help to ensure that the resources and technology are available when needed. Equipment provided to the Hospital by the Day of Difference Foundation has helped patients through various stages of their recovery process from the Emergency Department through to Outpatient Clinics.
Day of Difference is working with The Children’s Hospital at Westmead to facilitate the prevention, treatment and control of burns-related trauma and diseases, and also to ensure that they have the equipment necessary to provide the best possible care to their young patients. We have been able to raise the funds needed to purchase some of the items, but there is still plenty of work to do for which we really need your support.
